The Canopic jars

The term "Canopic" is derived from the name "Canoup" which is "Abukeir" nowadays in Alexandria. This name was used to refer to these jars by mistake. The Canopic jars are four jars were used for preserving the deceased's organs. From the early dynastic period until the 18th dynasty, their stoppers took the facial features of the deceased. Later on the stoppers were replaced by heads of the four sons of Horus as the protectors of the jars. Each one of the four gods was responsible for protecting a specific organ; god (Imisty) with the human head was the protector of the liver, god (Hapy) with baboon head was the protector of the lungs, god (Dwamutef) with the falcon head was the protector of the intestines, and finally god (Kepihsnwef) with jackal head was the protector of the stomach.
