THE FOUR BASIC COLORS
The ancient Egyptian
used four colors during the predynastic period and they are (black – white –
green – red). Using colors was symbolic rather than realistic.

It was called (km) in ancient Egypt.

It was derived from carbon.
-
It is the color of the black soil so Egypt was called (kmt), which is
meaning (The black land).
-
It is symbolizing fertility and generation in the underworld.
- Gods Osiris
and Re were sometimes represented with black skin to signify the resurrection and
rebirth.

God Anubis was sometimes shown with black skin to signify the funerary roles of him as god of mummification and his
connection with the under world.
-
Some scenes depict the deceased in black color to signify his renewal
and transformation.
2- the white color:
-
It was called (hdt).
-
It was derived from lime, gypsums or calcium carbonate.
-
It is symbolizing the purity so it was the color of clothes.

It was used to refer to light.
-
It also meant silver.
-
It was called (wad).
-
It was derived from copper or turquoise.
- It was derived from a green mineral is
called (malchaite).
- It is symbolizing fresh vegetation and regeneration, so it was given a
beneficial and positive symbolism. It is also symbolizing the sun rebirth.

It was used to ensure the regeneration of the deceased.

God Osiris is shown with green
skin to signify his resurrection after he was murdered.
4- The red color:
-
It was called (dsr).

It was derived from red granite or golden quartzite.
-
It is symbolizing fire, danger, life giving, protective, life and destructive.
-
It was used to refer to the desert and sun rising and setting.

the red color uses:
* Writing the names
and painting the figures of evil and dangerous creatures like (Seth and Apophis).
*
Writing unlucky days in the Egyptian calendar.
OTHER COLORS
1- Blue color:
-
It was derived from (lapis lazuli) or azure stone.
- It was the most prestigious paint color because it
was imported.

It was referring to the night sky and the primordial water.
- God Re was represented during Amarna
period with blue skin to symbolize: his role as a creator god and nightly
regeneration.
- God Amun-Re was represented with blue
color to symbolize the blue sky across which the sun travels.

Included the red color.
-
It was referring to the sun disk, metal gold and the sun god.
-
It is symbolizing the flesh of gods and goddesses and silver is
symbolizing their bones.
VARIATION IN COLORS OF GODS, GODDESSES, MEN, AND WOMEN
- Gods were represented with different colors and each color has a
specific symbolism was mentioned up.

God Osiris was shown with (green, black) skin.

God Anubis was shown with (black) skin.

God Amun-Re was shown with (blue) skin.

God Re was shown with (blue) skin.

The purposes of the different colors of (men and women) because
of:
1- Gender distinction, dark color for the southern people and a lighter color for the northern people.
2- Women from the south are darker
than men from the north.
3- Based on elite ideals relating to
male and female role in which women's responsibilities kept them in doors, so
that they spent less time in sun than men, so we can see women are lighter than
men in the color of skin.
4- Foreign men were shown with yellow skin and men to south were shown with black skin.
5- Black was not desirable.
